Bicycles, a great passion of the artist, have been the subject of several of the artists paintings and continue to be. The first true bicyle was developed in 1839 and over the centuries the bicycle has continued to be developed and has maintained its popularity. Historically the bicycle saw in a frontier for the emancipation of women and was dubbed in the 19th century by feminists and suffragists as the 'freedom machine'. In Africa, the bicycle is an invaluable way of getting around for a lot of people who often need to cover great distances each day with heavy loads of wood, crafts and possessions. |
