The Angela Dick Portrait

Angela Dick
Artist: Taf [Tafadzwa Mukwashi]
Oil on canvas
457mm x 610mm

Angela Dick, the co-founder and CEO of Transman, and the winner of the 2006 SA Business Women’s Association Woman of the Year award in the Entrepreneurial category, is the 15th face of Facing a Century by the artist Taf [Tafadzwa Mukwashi]. Her moment in Facing a Century is a textured oil painting in cheerful Transman yellow and lamp black, with a flash of cadmium red.

Born in a conservative area of Natal, Angela Dick resisted ‘marrying well’ and chose instead to train as a teacher – one of the few career paths readily available to young women at that time. The years that she spent teaching and lecturing diverse groups of students were the perfect training ground for her to develop the presentation skills and the skills of persuasion she uses today to drive home sales.

1980 found Angela at 3M’s audiovisual division in sales. She remembers staring at her phone for the first week, too petrified to cold call until she had a stern conversation with herself in which she reasoned that if others could do it, well, then she could too.

The Transman beginning was in 1983, after the birth of her fourth child. Angela, disturbed by the high levels of unemployment at the height of the apartheid era, decided to establish a business with her former partner that would source jobs for the jobless. She began with just one vehicle that would ferry workers from one site to the next. Today, Transman is a multi-million rand business that has recruited, screened, trained and placed over 2 million temporary and contract staff in various industries.

Angela Dick‘s mission with Transman is “…to provide employment for those in need; to improve the living conditions and quality of life of those in need by securing suitable employment; to provide training and development opportunities for those who have potential and are able and willing to learn in order to improve their situation; to provide opportunities for long-term financial security for as many of our people and their families as possible; to identify, develop, nurture, mentor and sustain entrepreneurs in the staffing services industry with a special focus on women; and to encourage, develop and sustain South African artists to explore and express, in their personal interpretation, the spirit and soul of South Africa reflected in our people.”

Some women, through example, motivate and inspire other women to reach higher, do more, be more. Angela Dick is one of those women, and it is a privilege to have a maverick such as her, who leads with wand and whip, as a part of Facing a Century.
