The Carlo Gonzaga Portrait

Carlo Gonzaga
Artist: Taf [Tafadzwa Mukwashi]
Oil on canvas
457mm x 610mm

Carlo Gonzaga, founder and CEO of Taste Holdings, is the man in the 19th portrait of Facing a Century. The portrait by the artist Taf [Tafadzwa Mukwashi] is a textured, oil on box canvas, classic grisaille painting in a paynes grey monochrome.

Taste Holdings is the JSE (Johannesburg Stock Exchange) listed holding company of four of South Africa’s leading and most loved consumer companies: Scooters Pizza (the founding entity of Taste), NWJ Jewellery, St Elmo’s and Maxi’s.

Carlo, a BSocSci & LLB, Law & Psychology graduate, is an Endeavor Entrepreneur ( and has served on the board of the Franchise Association of Southern Africa. A deep love for the tastiest pizza and the desire to get it served and delivered faster than ever before led to the opening of the first outpost of ‘Hot Tasty Fast’ in Westville, Durban in September 2000. Since opening that very first Scooters Pizza outlet, Carlo has created thousands of new jobs whilst championing a culture of entrepreneurship through his unique franchise model in Food and Jewellery. Over 30% of franchises are owned by and over 80% of franchise managers are previously disadvantaged individuals.

Carlo has a passion for motorcycling and an unremitting wanderlust resulted in him and three friends, Luigi Gonzaga, Curt Silver and Jay Currie, embarking on the Epic Scooters Pizza Delivery of 2007 – the longest overland pizza delivery the world had yet seen. The four friends left Johannesburg at the end of August with four Scooters Pizzas strapped in a freezer on the back of Speedy Gonzales, Carlo’s trusted BMW1200 motorcycle. In the 39 days that followed, Carlo and his companions successfully completed their mission, delivering two pizzas to Luigi’s mother in Fidenza, Italy, a pizza to Springbok Captain John Smit in France during the 2007 Rugby World Cup, and finally one to the South African Ambassador at South Africa House in London.

Always Proudly South African, Scooters Pizza holds the Scooters Pizza Whizzkid Week every year during the week leading up to National Youth Day. Scooters Pizza stores throughout South Africa invite children from their local community to learn about the art of pizza-making, make their own pizzas and celebrate with their own mini pizza party.

Carlo Gonzaga is a leading catalyst of entrepreneurship and economic growth in South Africa with a life strewn with bike-sized adventures. Thank you, Carlo, for adding your face and trail to the Journey.
