The Vuyani Bekwa Portrait

Vuyani Bekwa
Artist: Taf [Tafadzwa Mukwashi]
Diptych, oil on canvas
305mm x 406mm, 305mm x 406mm Vuyani Bekwa is the man in the 24th portrait of Facing a Century by the artist Taf [Tafadzwa Mukwashi]. His Pop Art diptych is a textured oil painting in lamp black and white.

Vuyani Bekwa was born in Mdantsane and spent his childhood in Peddie (eNggqushwa) in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. A graduate of the University of the Western Cape, Vuyani spent three years working as a research analyst at Labour Research Services, a trade union consultancy based in Cape Town where he played a role in developing South Africa’s first socially responsible unit trusts through his research on Community Growth and Income Funds. “We used to say we were completing our community service,” Bekwa says of that time which saw him and his colleagues working for relatively low personal, financial remuneration to achieve life-changing results for the employees of the companies they researched.

He then went on to spend eight years as an investment analyst and assistant fund manager at Marriott Asset Management – The Income Specialists. His MBA thesis on the allocation to listed property in retirement funds in South Africa has been published in local and international journals, including the International Review of Business Research Papers.

Today, Vuyani Bekwa is the co-fund manager of the Investec Property Equity Fund, South Africa’s top-performing unit trust. Vuyani has been an advisor on real estate transactions of over R2 billion in the past six years, is a member of the Investec LPI Investment Committee and is registered as a key individual with the Financial Services Board.

Vuyani loves architecture and is passionate about socially responsible investing, property (low-income housing solutions), infrastructure and green energy solutions. He is married to the lovely Zama and they have two daughters, Siyabulela and Wanda, aged 9 and 4 respectively.

Thank you, Vuyani Bekwa, for adding your inspiring trail to Facing a Century!
